Number 4. The Swasey Tavern. 2 Poplar Street. The Swasey Tavern provided hospitality to many important visitors. George Washington was offered refreshment there on his way to Newburyport. No, he didn't sleep there. The Tavern was actually built by Joseph Ayers, though he only lived there for a few years. In later years, it was the dormitory for the Ipswich Female Seminary, one of the early schools which provided young women with a rigorous academic education. In the late 19th century, it was renovated in the Second Empire style.
