South Green      Number 1, South Green.  Most New England towns are centered about a single green. Ipswich has two. Your walk will begin at the South Green. Many of the most important early settlers received grants of land here, Nathaniel Rogers, Giles Firmin (also spelled Gyles Fyrmin) and Richard Saltonstall.
South Green was originally known as School House Green. The house on the left is the John Baker house.
This is how the Green would have appeared to Joseph Felt who wrote History of Ipswich in 1834.
