Number 7. The Heard House. 54 South Main Street. The Heard House was built in 1795 by John Heard. Before the Revolutionary War, he had invested in the rum factory which was located on the river nearby. Like many others he invested the money he made in other businesses in town. His family had become involved in shipping and increased their assets in the China trade. His most famous son was Augustine Heard whose clipper ships competed with those of Salem and Boston. Many items that he brought back from China enhance the beauty of their home.Like the Whipple House, the Heard House is open to the public. A special exhibit commemorates the 200th anniversary of the building of the house. |
